Worksafe and the Department of Transport have advised that due to the number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from forklift operations they are ramping up inspections of businesses operating forklifts and other mobile plant to see if they have a traffic management plan in place.
A TMP is a document that outlines how you manage traffic risks in a specific area. It details how to safely and efficiently manage the movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and goods, ensuring safety, legal compliance, and operational efficiency. Essentially, it’s a plan to minimize disruptions and hazards associated with traffic in a particular location.
Any business with vehicles or mobile plant operating in a workplace where there is a risk of collision with people needs a traffic management plan. This includes construction sites, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, marinas and any workplace with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Even smaller businesses in shared spaces or with limited vehicle movement may benefit from a plan to manage risks.
Identifying potential hazards related to traffic, including vehicle interactions, pedestrian movement, and specific site conditions.
Detailing how to manage identified risks, such as implementing traffic control devices (signs, barriers, etc.), establishing pedestrian walkways, and managing vehicle routes.
Outlining how to handle emergencies, including access for emergency vehicles.
Clearly defining who is responsible for managing traffic and implementing the plan.
Regularly assessing the effectiveness of the plan and making adjustments as needed.
Ensuring all relevant parties are informed about the plan and any changes to traffic conditions.
