A few weeks ago, shockingly a very famous cruise ship had a very dramatic person overboard emergency. According to news outlets, the young child fell overboard, and the father jumped in to save his child. Thankfully, due to the swift action of the very well-trained crew, they rescued both persons from the water both swiftly and safely.
The company remarked in the media “We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.”
How many times have we read of a person overboard never to be seen again? Why? There are many elements that play a part, however, hands down, with the correct training and regular renewal of this training, if this shocking incident shall occur, the best outcome is most favourable!
THE PERSON OVERBOARD TRAINING IS IMPERATIVE!
We have personally seen in our business, the ramifications of a vessel that has lost a person overboard. The mental, financial and physical impact – has led to many business’ closing down and even sadly with owners taking their own lives.
And sadly, even with recreational owners. The toll it takes on not only every person on board when the incident occurs, it is the wider community that is effected and it is devasting.
That is why, any lengthy conversation you may have with the staff here at Shorlink inevitably leads to us talking about how vital training is for all vessel owners. And we mean ALL!
Following up with regular training. One session isn’t enough. Refreshing everyone on the actions required can and will save a life!
Outside of the obvious, the law states that as an employer (for our commercial vessel owners) you are responsible for providing health and safety information and training to your employees!
Even if you are a recreational boat owner, ensuring everyone onboard including those operating your vessel should have clear knowledge and understanding of what to do to survive! Our training sessions are offered to everyone over the age of 12! Why? What if you and your child are out on the boat, and you fall overboard……
So whilst here at Shorlink, we offer several training courses. And we recommend them all – we implore you to ensure every single person that comes onboard your vessel, whether you have the biggest commercial vessel, or you have a recreational vessel you take out twice a year – to please engage Person Overboard Training as a priority, NOW!
