We know log books are important, AND you have them onboard as per AMSA requirements, AND you are pretty sure they are completed correctly!
You have an AMSA inspection, and guess what, your Log Book is not completed correctly, you are now non-compliant and a fine is issued or even worse!
YOU NEED TO REVIEW YOUR LOG BOOK TODAY AND REGULARLY!
The vessel Log Book is a prescribed document in which certain events must be recorded. Entries must be made at the proper time and in the prescribed manner and form.
An Official Log Book is required to be kept in accordance with Section 309 of the Navigation Act 2012. The manner in which entries are to be made and attested are specified in Marine Orders.
Entries should be made in order of date and no blank spaces should be left.
Completed Official Log Books should be retained by the ship owner for a period of at least 5 years.
To date, we have seen some very interesting Log Books that definitely DO NOT meet the requirements, therefore you are not only non-compliant with AMSA but also not covered legally in the event of an incident.
Very simply, every log book should be reviewed regularly by both the Skipper of the vessel and Owner of the business to keep a close eye on all operations of the vessel and the log book is containing an accurate representation of these operations.
Each Log Book carries different information which is completed by different crew. For example, the Master is responsible for the Vessel Log book ; The Engine Log Book can only be completed by the Watchkeeping Engineer.
Therefore whilst the information is completed by various people on board – at the end of the day, the Skipper of the vessel is responsible for the vessel and all it contains, including the Log Books.
However, the owner is legally responsible for the safety of the vessel and its operations, and therefore the Log Book plays an important element in ensuring that you are covered legally in case of an incident.
